While not the pseudonymous Sandford's best, (he is Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Camp) this is a swift, satisfying entry in a series with long, muscular legs. Lucas Davenport returns - in the most harrowing Prey of all.Everybody has his secrets. The action doesn't always wash: Davenport tumbles to Carmel's involvement too easily, and Carmel's ferocious response to being framed by Davenport redefines the term ""over the top."" The play between the two women, who bond like sisters, is as fascinating as the courtship of venomous lizards, and the novel's background hum-comprised of various amatory rustlings, forensic and legal ploys, and maneuvers among cops, FBI agents, mobsters and the killers-is rich in authentic detail. When the junkie who connected Carmel to Rinker blackmails the pair, for instance, Carmel tortures him with an electric drill as Rinker watches.

The vast popularity of the Prey novels is probably due, then, not so much to this dependable hero as to Sandford's clever plotting, sure pacing and fully rounded villains-as well as his smart prose. I didn't think it would make a big difference but the difference was actually huge.For all his brooding, Minneapolis cop Lucas Davenport lacks the charisma of, say, Robert B. I highly recommend skipping this one and looking to see who is narrating. Over the years I have become a BIG fan of the Prey series but I was unable to even get through this one. Around him stood the four executives with whom he had been hunting, each with his or her own complicated agenda, each with a reason not to be sorrowful about the man's death. His attemps at female voices are terrible and it completely takes away from the stories. The company chairman lay on the cold ground of the woods, his eyes unseeing, his orange hunting jacket punctured by a rifle bullet at close range. The narrator tried to hard to give emotion to a man who isn't supposed to express all that much emotion to begin with.
With the switch to this new narrator, Lucas Davenport became a COMPLETELY different person. Over time the reader could distinguish between vocal tones, knowing what type of response Lucas was giving. Richard Ferrone was the narrator for the previous Prey series and had developed the character of Lucas Davenport in a specific way. You may like that person, you may not, but the point is you have grown to understand and find some sort of comfort in the consistency of that. One of the things about listening to an audio series, or reading one for that matter, is that you begin to understand who the main character is that you are following through all these books.
